When solar wind encounters Earth's magnetosphere, it interacts with the geomagnetic field. The charged particles in the solar wind are deflected by the magnetic field lines, causing the magnetosphere to compress on the day side and stretch out into a long tail on the night side. This interaction also leads to the transfer of energy from the solar wind to the Earth's magnetic field, causing geomagnetic storms and auroras, beautiful displays of light that occur near the Earth's poles when charged particles descend along the magnetic field lines and collide with the atmosphere.

Cosmic rays entering the solar system interact with both the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), which originates from the Sun, and the Earth's magnetic field. The combined effect of these magnetic fields causes the cosmic rays to scatter, changing their trajectories and making it difficult for them to penetrate the Earth's magnetosphere. As a result, the geomagnetic field acts as a shield, protecting the Earth from high-energy cosmic rays. However, some particles with sufficiently high energy can still penetrate the magnetic field and reach Earth's atmosphere, where they can create secondary particles and cause various effects such as increased cloud cover and changes in the ozone layer.
